Louisa Swain Day 2023

Each year, we celebrate the historic moment of Louisa Swain's groundbreaking vote with a special reenactment. On September 9, 2023, we brought to life the pivotal figures who played key roles in Wyoming's suffrage history at the Wyoming Women’s History House Plaza. The beautiful fall weather and excitement of Wyoming Cowboys game, created a memorable and meaningful celebration for all in attendance.

Louisa Swain Day 2023 encapsulated the essence of Wyoming's suffrage history, bringing pivotal moments to life. As we reflect on this special morning, we're reminded of the enduring legacy these extraordinary women have left for us all.

Louisa Swain’s Historic Vote Reenactment

Sue Peters, embodying the spirit of Louisa Gardner Swain, cast her vote at the Wyoming Women’s History House plaza.

Honoring History

LSF Executive Director, Mary Mountain, waited as Louisa stepped up to vote and the morning became truly special as other historic men and women shared their stories.

Standing with Louisa at the special event reenactment in the front row: Bernie Horst as Eliza Stewart, first woman ever asked to sit on a jury; Allison Nyholm, Chair of the LSF Board; Germaine St. John as Nellie Tayloe Ross, first woman to ever serve as governor of a U.S. state; and Judy Knight as Esther Hobart Morris, first woman to ever serve as justice of the peace. In the back row behind this illustrious group were Elsa Wolf Barnes as Martha Washington who cheered the progress made for women’s rights by the young Territory of Wyoming; Bob Mountain as Judge John Howe, one of the “men of suffrage” we showcase in the Women’s History House; and Jenn Thompson, Vice Chair of the LSF Board and a descendant of Thyra Thompson who was Wyoming’s first woman Secretary of State. Not pictured were our many supportive Laramie visitors including Holly Krutka, our newest member of the Louisa Swain Foundation Board.
